• The flu or influenza, is a contagious virus that is spread from one person to another through tiny droplets that are released into the air when a person infected with the flu, coughs or sneezes. Sometimes, people can become infected by touching their nose or mouth after touching something infected by the flu virus. It is recommended for all adults to get their annual flu shot before the flu season starts. You cannot get the flu from the vaccine.
• Human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer. Just 10% of women 18 to 26 have been vaccinated.
• Shingles, a painful condition caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It is recommended for adults over age 60, but just 1.9% have had it.
• Whooping cough. Just 2.1% of adults have had booster shots, which are recommended for those under age 65.
• Pneumonia, is a serious lung disease that can follow a cold or the flu. It is very important for all people over 65 to have a second Dose of Pneumonia Vaccine. Pneumonia is MOST dangerous to this age group.
A person over age 65 who had their first dose before age 65 and more than 5 years have passed since they received the vaccine.
Anyone with a damaged or no spleen.
Anyone with sickle cell disease or cancer.
Anyone with HIV.
Anyone with kidney failure or nephrotic syndrome.
Anyone who has had an organ or bone marrow transplant.
Anyone taking immune-suppressing drugs (such as long-term steroids or chemotherapy).
