Cudahy Police Department Victorious Over South Milwaukee Police Department

Saturday, Apr 18 2009, 10:45 PM

Congratulations to the Cudahy Police Department for the win in the 8th annual Battle of the Badges.  Congratulations to the Make-A-Wish foundation of Wisconsin.

In a friendly game of basketball between rivals at Cudahy High School, the game was very evenly matched.  In the end, the Cudahy Police basketball squad won 69 to 63.

The most important aspect of the game was the money raised for the Make-A-Wish foundation of Wisconsin.

Cudahy’s K-9, Ezzo, along with Officer and Handler Brian Olson were in attendance.

Cudahy Fourth District Alderperson Jason Litkowiec was there along with Cudahy Police Chief Thomas D Poellot and South Milwaukee’s Police Chief Ann Wellens.

I did not see Cudahy Mayor McCue in attendance.

Cudahy’s Sgt Chris Blunt's family won the prize of a free sub each week from Cousins Subs.  A big congratulations to the Blunt family.

Cousins Subs was the sponsor and had concessions on hand at the game.  Even the Cousins Subs mascot was there for support and pictures.

The rematch game will be held on May 2nd, the Cudahy Police and Fire Departments will square off at 5pm in their annual battle.  Members of the Cudahy School District faculty will play at 3pm on May 2nd.  The proceeds for the May 2nd games will benefit Dennis LeDoux, a Cudahy Firefighter who was forced to retire following a duty incurred injury and who is still struggling from his injury.

Since 2002, Battle of the Badges has raised $20,187 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Germantown Police Dog Ill

By Randy Hollenbeck
Sunday, Dec 14 2008, 09:32 AM

Many Cudahy residents may remember the Germantown police dog Bosco.  Officer Bosco (yes he is a police officer) came to Cudahy to do a demonstration this year.

Story here Crime and Drug Town Hall Meeting

This demonstration was instrumental in helping to get Cudahy’s police dog.  We owe a great deal of gratitude to officer Bosco and his handler officer Jeff Schnell.

Donations are being asked for and can be sent to:

Germantown Police Department, P.O. Box 96, Germantown, WI 53022

I have included the full article below.  My prayers and wishes go out to officer Bosco for a speedy recovery.

Donations needed for ill police dog

Germantown residents are being asked to help pay for canine police officer Bosco's medical expenses.

A procedure to remove a cell mass had to be stopped Dec. 2 when the 6-year-old dog's heart rate increased to a dangerous level after he was given anesthetic.  Doctors had intended to study the mass after its removal to determine if it was cancerous.

Later in the week, doctors told officer Jeff Schnell that Bosco has anal fistula, which can be treated with medication without having to undergo surgery.

"On the whole, we are optimistic that Bosco will recover; however, we will have to monitor the mass and hope the medication works," Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell said.

Bosco has incurred $1,300 in medical bills, and help is needed to pay for continued treatment.  The cost could reach $4,000, Hoell estimated.

As of Monday afternoon, the department had received more than $3,300 in donations, the chief said.

"We are committed to doing everything we can to cure Bosco," Hoell said.  "But we do need help, so we are asking for the public's support in offsetting Bosco's medical bills."

Contributions can be sent to Germantown Police Department, P.O. Box 96, Germantown, WI 53022

Cudahy Police K 9 Unit

By Alderman Joe Mikolajczak

The city of Cudahy is in the process of approving a Police Canine Unit.  This has been a proven and beneficial part of many police, sheriff departments as well as the State Patrol.

The Canine Unit trains on a consistent basis to keep the canine/handler team sharp and proficient at their skills.  The canine/handler team train virtually on a daily basis and once a month they train with a group of other canine handler's in the area.  The unit will provide better quality Law Enforcement and protection for the citizens and Police personnel for Cudahy and our neighboring communities.

The greatest value of a Canine Unit lies in its mere presence on the street.  The psychological effect of a Police Canine is tremendous, and their deterrent effect on crime cannot be measured.  The Canine is not to replace Police Officers, but to work as a member of a canine/handler team.  The Canine's remarkable sense of smell and sound are the main reason police departments utilize canines.  These senses allow the canines to perform functions that the human Police Officer just cannot do.  Canine/Handler teams can be used in the following situations utilizing these incredible skills.

Some of these uses of a Police Canine Unit include:

TRACKING - A canine can track human beings through a combination of human scent and ground disturbance.  Tracking is used mostly in locating and following a suspect's trail from the scene of various crimes, such as burglary, robbery, prowling, etc.

BUILDING SEARCHES - The use of canines to search buildings and homes is perhaps the most utilized of all the abilities they possess.  A large warehouse, office building, house or school which has been burglarized, or in which the alarm has been activated, are places where the canine is most functional.  Suspects that are hiding from Police possess a strategic advantage over the officers.  They can hear and often see officers coming and can ambush.  With the use of a canine to locate suspects this is often prevented.

CRIME SCENE/EVIDENCE SEARCHES - The canine can point out objects within a specific area that are foreign to the ground.  Canines can be very useful in recovery of physical evidence in brush and tall grass.

OPEN AREA SEARCHES - Cudahy has many densely vegetated areas which can provide suspects with hiding places.  Often these suspects are armed and pose a danger to the officers who are required to arrest them.  A properly trained canine can be used in these situations to locate the suspect while minimizing the danger to Police Officers.  The canine, with his superior olfactory (his nose) and hearing senses, is capable of conducting a more thorough search in less time than even a large number of officers.

APPREHENSION OF FLEEING SUSPECTS - Occasionally the canine may be called upon to apprehend and contain a fleeing suspect.  This can prevent the use of greater force to subdue a fleeing or combative suspect.  At any point before the apprehension, if the suspect gives up, the canine can be recalled without apprehension.

NARCOTIC SEARCHES - The use of canines to locate narcotics is another valuable ability.  Canines can locate hidden narcotics using their superior olfactory skills.  These narcotics can be hidden in false vehicle compartments, behind false walls or any other area in which small or large quantities can be concealed.  Police Canines are often trained to locate the odor of marijuana, cocaine, cocaine base, hashish and heroin.

PUBLIC RELATIONS - The Canine Unit can be is often made available to public and private groups for demonstrations and discussions about police related business.

I would like to thank Chief Poellot, Sgt. Scheel, Sgt. Blunt, the neighborhood watch and the many others who helped to make the Cudahy K-9 unit move forward to soon become reality.  If you would like to help donations are being accepted though the Cudahy Police Department.

K9 Unit Thanks!

By Randy Hollenbeck
Thursday, May 29 2008, 11:12 AM

I would like to thank Alderman Joe Mikolajczak, Police Sergeant Chris Blunt, and Police Chief Thomas Poellot for all the hard work and time they put into making this K9 Unit a possibility in Cudahy.

I am sure the scumbags do not thank you, but the rest of the citizens of Cudahy and I do.  As Alderman Joe Mikolajczak likes to say, "What good are quality developments and a great park system if people are afraid to go to them"?  A K9 Unit is a tool in reducing crime in Cudahy to make those who live and work here safe.

I would also like to thank Mayor Ryan McCue for moving past the 2% uncertainty in this program and moving along with the consensus of the rest involved.  While he was 98% behind it at his State of the city address, he needed more to convince him.  I am sure if you would have asked for the hard numbers in January they would have greatly been supplied.  It is great that you felt that all things needed to be looked at and should not be fast tracked.  Again thank you for at least making this K9 Unit possible in the year 2008 and not wanting studies or sitting on it longer.

This will be a very good tool for the Cudahy police and those who thought that the K9 Unit was a toy, shame on you.  It is just too bad the Unit didn’t get the go ahead in January as it would be possible that the Unit could have been operational for the summer in the time of greatest need.

Again, I would like to thank Alderman Joe Mikolajczak, Police Sergeant Chris Blunt, Police Chief Thomas Poellot, and all the police officers of Cudahy for the hard work on the support of pushing the K9 unit in Cudahy.  Nobody can take the credit away from you in this endeavor.

THANK YOU!!!
